Ordinary double glazed windows simply consist of two panes of glass, separated by a pocket of air in the middle. The problem with this is that the air within the panes acts as a very weak buffer between the cold air outside and warm air inside meaning that heat transfers and is lost.

One particularly effective form of insulation is Argon Gas Insulation. Gases like Argon, Xenon and Krypton have a lower thermal conductivity than air meaning that substituting the air with these means lowering the transfer of warm air through the window panes.

In recent years the materials available for window frames have evolved dramatically. The development of UPVC (Unplasticized Poly Vinyl Chloride) as an alternative to wood has been a major boon to the industry. UPVC is extremely durable and essentially, extremely heat efficient. The material seals the window more effectively than other materials like wood and aluminium and its compacted material retains heat better than either.
